An outstanding piece of fantasy fiction, and a perfectly satisfying, nuanced romance. For those who are new to A. H. Lee’s work, this story is a fitting introduction to her expert storytelling and her richly drawn world of Mistala. Merek and Ian are irresistibly sweet together, a dynamic that forms a perfect contrast with the eerie setting and the excitement of the unfolding action as Merek at last learns what drove Ian to the tower. The plot is so tight the pages turn themselves. (Oh, and there’s an excellent dog in the story, too! Two, if you count ghosts.)
